Mistakes To Avoid

Contest Do Nots
DLH works with top writers on your favorite shows, including New Amsterdam, Chicago Med, The Resident, and more.

We are a non-profit project of the OneLegacy Foundation, the organ procurement organization for Southern California. Our mission is to partner with the entertainment industry and eliminate the Hollywood Myths that stop people from signing up to be donors.

You can help our mission! As a DLH Storyteller your creativity engages Hollywood to save lives.

A panel of actors, writers and producers will judge your DLH Storyteller submission and winning videos are honored alongside DLH Inspire Winners, which include entertainment industry legends.
Donation myths and misconceptions stop people from signing up to be donors.

Many of those myths come from Hollywood. The number one reason people don’t want the donor dot on their license is because they believe the myth “they won’t work as hard to save me”.

A donor dot on your license is a powerful symbol of your decision to save lives, it will not affect the medical care you would receive in an emergency.
  • Doctors are focused on saving your life — not somebody else’s
  • Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) run the donation process
  • Emergency and hospital caregivers have no access to the donation and transplant systems
  • Hospitals and first responders are not incentivized or rewarded for facilitating donation
There are many ways to debunk the myth "they won't work as hard to save you". Below are resources and strategies to create a compelling PSA. Choose ONE strategy to create a winning submission.
  • Strategy #1: State the Facts
Goal: Share the following facts in your PSA
Facts: A donor dot on your license is a powerful symbol of your decision to save lives, but it will not affect the medical care you receive in an emergency.
    Ideas:
    • Create interesting visuals to state the facts!
    • Create a TikTok style video
    • Use graphics, animation and voiceover
  • Strategy #2: Share real life stories
Goal: Share real life stories of donor families talking about their experience in the hospital and how everything was done to save their loved one’s life.
    Ideas:
    • Download real life story videos and edit together
    • Use music to set the tone
    • Videos are copyright approved and can be used in your submission to DLH Storytellers without further consent
  • Strategy #3: Explain the role of the OPO (OneLegacy)
Goal: Help people understand that a non-profit OPO runs the donation system, not the hospital working to save your life.
    Resources:
    Ideas:
    • Create a PSA that answers these three questions: What does an OPO do? How is the OPO separate from the hospital? What is the OPO in Southern California? (It’s OneLegacy!)
